Naadam tour in Ulaanbaatar

The Naadam Festival showcases Mongolia’s finest in the three ‘manly sports' of horse racing, archery and wrestling. Females participate in the first two. The festival is the biggest event of the year for foreigners and locals alike and is held all over the country, normally between 11 and 13 July . The first two days are when most of the major events take place, and the third day tends to be a day of conviviality.

Kazak nomads first started to come to what is now Bayan Olgi in the 1840s. The nomads came to graze their sheep on the high mountain pastures during summer, and spent the winter in Kazakhstan or Xinjiang  province in China. After the Mongolian revolution in 1921, a permanent border was drawn by agreement between China, Russia and Mongolia, but the Kazaks remained nomadic until the 1930’s, crossing the border at will.

The word kazak is said to mean ‘ free warrior’ or steppe roamer’.  Tavanbogd – Five Saints mountains rises 4374m above the borders of free nations,  and for this reason it is also known as Nairamdal ( Freindship) Peak in 2002. Nowadays Mongolians are re-named  Great Mongol Peak. If you sit on the summit, you can simultaneously be in Mongolia, China and Russia.
